Supporting wellbeing during maternity
Relieving & Supporting Symptoms
Reflexology involves a method of treatment using massage to “reflex areas” found in the feet and the hands. Reflexology in pregnancy may help to relieve some symptoms, such as morning sickness, backache, fluid retention as well as helping with tension, encouraging relaxation and sleep issues. There are points on the feet that should be avoided during pregnancy, it is therefore important that you ensure that your reflexologist is properly qualified and insured for this specialised area of reflexology.
specialist & Highly experienced
Since I qualified as a reflexologist, I have undertaken additional training for Maternity Reflexology and have had the opportunity of working with many women during their pregnancies ( and sometimes even labour ).
Reflexology may also be used to encourage labour to begin, however this is only likely to happen if both mum to be and baby are ready. It is always recommended that those clients who wish to use reflexology for this purpose begin their reflexology sessions at least six weeks prior to their predicted term date i.e. by 34 weeks pregnant.
Unfortunately, I cannot give any guarantees that it will be successful, I have had both successful and unsuccessful clients in this respect, however I do maintain that the treatment will be enjoyable and relaxing regardless of the outcome!
There are two recent studies that have shown that reflexology in pregnancy significantly reduced pain during labour *, reduced the length of first stage labour*, and improved the quality of sleep in post-natal women**.
This is the period during which your body sees huge changes in hormone levels, coupled with excitement and maybe some anxieties, you may be feeling weepy and exhusted, reflexology at this point may help de-stress, aid relaxation and offer support.
Second and Third Trimester
As your baby grows during this phase of pregnancy you may experience other physical symptoms and anxiety levels may also rise as the birth becomes imminent. Reflexology can be used to address various physical symptoms, promote better sleep, and offer comfort and support.
Post maternity reflexology may help ease anxiety and give you a well earned hour in which to relax. It may also ease pain and discomfort and aid recovery after surgery.
